THE SALVATION ARMY PARTNERS WITH OTHER NON-PROFITS TO HELP FAMILIES PUT THEIR LIVES BACK TOGETHER AFTER TORNADOES
Volunteers Still Needed to Help Aid Victims
WAKE COUNTY, NC (Wednesday, April 27, 2011) The Salvation Army of Wake County is continuing to assist families who have been affected by the recent tornadoes. Currently, meals are being fed to families and individuals that have been misplaced, and case workers are meeting with victims to assess their needs and help meet them as quickly and fully as possible.
Other non-profits are partnering with The Salvation Army to provide these needs. The Green Chair Project is coordinating with The Salvation Army of Wake County to provide warehouse space for furniture and household goods that have been donated. The Green Chair Project will also be hosting a “Rebuild Raleigh” event on Saturday, April 30 from 9am-1pm at their warehouse (1319 Capital Blvd, Raleigh), where people can bring gently-used household items, furniture and more. For more information on this event, visit www.thegreenchair.org.
Clothing donations are no longer being accepted, due to an overwhelming response from the community. Food donations are still being accepted at The Salvation Army’s downtown Raleigh location at 215 S. Person Street.
Transportation is another critical need that some tornado victims face. To remain employed and put their lives together, many need a car to replace ones which have been heavily damaged or destroyed. Wheels4Hope, a local, faith-based car donation program is partnering with the Salvation Army to help. Wheels4Hope takes donated cars, repairs them as they are able and places them back into the community for use by those in need. Wheels4Hope will aid tornado victims by providing vehicles to families referred to them by the Salvation Army. Those who are interested in donating their used car should contact Wheels4Hope at 919-832-1941 or go to www.wheels4hope.org. Donors will receive a tax deduction for up to the full retail value of the car.
Local businesses are also pitching in to help. Crabtree Valley Mall is accepting food donations outside of the mall, near the Sears entrance, on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26 and 27. They are also accepting financial donations at their guest services desk.
Volunteers are still needed to help sort donations at all locations. For more information on getting assistance from The Salvation Army, volunteering or donating to the local disaster, please call the offices at 919-834-6733 or visit www.keepthebellringing.org.
About the Salvation Army
William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth’s mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth’s first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
