The Salvation Army of Wake County Needs Help in Filling the Food Pantry.
WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (Friday, June 4, 2010) The Salvation Army of Wake County needs the help of the community: unless food donations come in over the weekend, they will not be able to continue their food distribution program next week. Those most in need of nourishment in our community will go without food if a great response is not seen over the weekend. They are asking the Wake County community to come together and bring food donations to help replenish the supply.
The Salvation Army of Wake County has seen a decline in the past few months of food donations. “The shelves are bare and it saddens us to not be able to provide the essential food items for those in need”, says Captain Greg Davis, Commanding Officer in Wake County. “The last resort will be to cancel the appointments we have setup for next week, but we sincerely hope that this does not have to happen.”
The Salvation Army of Wake County is hoping the community will see this need and respond by getting together with their friends, families, co-workers and churches to provide the much needed food and supplies for their pantry. Whether it be a group effort by a civic club to hold a food drive, or a family outing to the grocery store to purchase some cans, there is a way for everyone to be involved.
The Salvation Army of Wake County distributes 50 grocery bags a week to those in need. Items such as canned fruits and vegetables, as well as dry goods such as rice and pasta, are most needed. If you would like to donate to the Salvation Army or set up a food drive in your area, please contact their main office at 919.834.6733 or visit them at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.
About the Salvation Army
William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth’s mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth’s first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
