The Shelves Are Bare

The Salvation Army of Wake County Needs Food Donations

Wake County, North Carolina (Tuesday, July 7, 2009): The Salvation Army of Wake County is in desperate need of food donations. They are reporting a decline in financial and food donations. As well, other organizations they receive funding from are being cut from the state and local budget and they are now feeling the pinch with bare shelves in their food pantry.  “The shelves are bare and it saddens us to not be able to provide the essential food items for those in need”, says Captain Greg Davis, Commanding Officer of the Wake County Command. “We provide food for 50 families weekly as well as serving 150 nightly in our soup line. It will be detrimental for us to purchase food to continue these services. The last thing we want to do is cut short our programs for the people of this community.”

The Salvation Army of Wake County is hoping the community will see this need and respond by getting together with their friends, families, co-workers and churches to provide the much needed food and supplies for their pantry. Paige Bagwell, Director of Operations and Communications adds that “We see more and more people standing in our lines on a daily basis, citizens that have never asked us for help, mothers who are desperate to provide for their children. We do not want to turn people away who need it the most. We pray our community can help us recover from this unfortunate situation.”

If you would like to donate to The Salvation Army or set up a food drive in your area, please contact their main office at 919.834.6733 or visit them at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

About the Salvation Army

William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth’s mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth’s first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC  27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
