OVER 7,800 CHILDREN IN NEED RECEIVED GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The Salvation Army of Wake County Thanks the Community for Their Support This Christmas Season

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (January 10, 2012) The Salvation Army of Wake County would like to thank everyone who contributed to their 2011 Christmas Cheer program. Through the efforts of countless volunteers, donors, businesses and community members, The Salvation Army was able to serve 14,265 individuals, making the holiday season brighter for many Wake County families and residents.

Over, 2000 volunteers, giving over 6,000 hours of their time within the span of 2 months, helped to make all of the programs a success. As a result of the community’s generous donation of time, money, and resources, The Salvation Army was able to distribute 51,298 new toys and gifts to over 7,800 children as a part of the Angel Tree and Toy Shop programs. Thanks to Triangle Spokes Group, The Salvation Army was able to distribute over 500 bikes to these children as well.

In addition, many corporations throughout the community contributed to help make the program a success. Time Warner Cable’s “Holiday Hopes and Happenings” Campaign encouraged the community to donate new toys at their locations, as well as encouraging their employees to adopt Angels from the Angel Tree.  Economy Exterminators participated again in 2011 in a matching gift program for "Christmas Cheer," administered through The Salvation Army. Due to the generosity of clients, Economy Exterminators made a yearly donation of $7235.00 to help assist individuals with finances, food and clothing. Fidelity Investments also made a large contribution to the Angel Tree Program, as well as providing hot chocolate, refreshments, and warm scarves for clients as they waited to receive the toys. Other corporations that assisted include Dean’s Wrecker Service, WRAL-TV 5, Jiffy Lube, First Citizens Bank, PPD, Waste Industries, Spectrum Properties and more.

Major Pete Costas, Commanding Officer for Wake County, reminds the community that The Salvation Army gives assistance all year round, not just at Christmas. “We are working all year to meet the most basic and crucial needs of those in our County. We thank the community for their work during the holiday season, as well as all year long, in helping us make a difference in the lives of those around us.” For more information on how to get involved as a volunteer, donor or supporter, visit www.keepthebellringing.org.
