Magellan Charter School 8th Graders Give "Heavily"

Donation of 2,000 pounds of food to The Salvation Army of Wake County

Wake County, NC (February 24, 2009): The Salvation Army of Wake County proudly accepts a donation of 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food from the 8th graders at Magellan Charter School. The students collected food for the pantry at The Salvation Army of Wake County to feed the women and children in the shelter, the soup line and the families that come for food assistance on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"In a time where many families are struggling to put food on the table, it is so nice to see the generosity and caring nature of these students to help those in need, states Paige Bagwell, Director of Operations and Communications. "We rarely see large donations like this one; 2,000 pounds is a huge blessing for our pantry", Bagwell continued.

Students, along with the PTA President, Tracy Whitt and parents delivered the food to the pantry. It took the efforts of staff members, students, and parents to bring the large donation into the pantry. "We as the community of Magellan are grateful for the Salvation Army and for the work they do to provide food, shelter and great programs to help families in our area. We were excited to be able to help in some small way. I am proud of our students who worked hard to gather and deliver the food and I know they were humbled by the opportunity to serve", explained Whitt.

The Salvation Army of Wake County is feeling the pinch of the economy with donations down around 10% and social services lines getting longer. If you would like more information on how you can help this organization, please go to their website at www.keepthebellringing.org.

About the Salvation Army
William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth's mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth's first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC  27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
