A TOUGH SUBJECT: CHILDREN GO BACK TO SCHOOL WITH EMPTY BOOKBAGS
The Salvation Army Partners with Target and NBC-17 to Call the Community to Action
WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (Monday, August 2, 2010) Summer is almost over and Back to School Season is here. For most students, they have already bought their supplies and their new clothes; however, for others who cannot afford to purchase any new supplies, the thought of returning to school is sad and embarrassing. This is why The Salvation Army is calling the community to action – to come together and help send every child back to school with the supplies they need to succeed. Through partnerships with NBC-17, Crabtree Valley Mall, and Target, The Salvation Army is confident that this goal will be achieved.
During difficult economic times, many families are worried about putting food on the table, and buying school supplies is simply not an option. With a Back to School Supply Drive with NBC-17 and Crabtree Valley Mall, as well as a Target School Spree for 90 children, there are many ways for people to get involved and help provide for these families. Major Pete Costas, Commanding Officer for The Salvation Army of Wake County states, “Simply having a new backpack and a new notebook on the first day of school can make a huge difference in a child’s life, giving them confidence and excitement to excel in their schoolwork. We want to make this happen for thousands of children, with the help of our community.
The Back to School Drive will be held August 2-8, with collection barrels in Center Court and Promotional Court at Crabtree Valley Mall. The Target School Spree will take place on August 10, where 90 children will be able to spend a donated $80 gift card from Target on school supplies and clothing. For more information, or to volunteer for these events, please call The Salvation Army at 919-834-6733.
About the Salvation Army
William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth’s mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth’s first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
