WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (January 20, 2010) -The Salvation Army of Wake County would like to thank everyone who contributed to their 2009 Christmas Cheer program. Through the efforts of countless volunteers, donors, businesses and community members, The Salvation Army was able to serve 16,211 individuals and 2269 families, making the holiday season brighter for many Wake County residents.
As a result of the community’s generous donation of time, money, and resources, The Salvation Army was able to distribute 67,611 new toys and gifts to over 5500 children as a part of the Angel Tree and Toy Shop programs. In addition, gift packages were delivered to 2,085 nursing home residents and 4,227 prisons inmates. Through the WRAL-TV5 Coats for the Children Telethon, 7001 coats were donated to help keep Wake County warm during these cold winter months.
The Salvation Army would like to remind the community that these seasonal programs, as well as the assistance programs they offer year-round, are only made possible through the continued support of the citizens of Wake County.
About the Salvation Army
William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865, when he left the Methodist ministry to begin a mission in the poverty-stricken slums of London. Booth’s mission chose to take the message of hope and salvation to destitute people who needed it the most. Many of Booth’s first converts to Christianity were rejected by traditional churches due to their pasts, but Booth still continued to support them spiritually and to challenge them to save others just as they had saved themselves. Today, The Salvation Army serves through a network of more than 9,000 US based units. One of the largest charitable and social service organizations in the world, The Salvation Army has been helping those in need since 1865. The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and safe housing to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, and many more services to assist those in need. Locally, The Salvation Army has been serving the people of Wake County since 1887 and maintains a program and services investment of 91 cents for every dollar received from the community. Its Wake County headquarters is located at 215 South Person Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
